How We Craft Our Solid Wood Pieces Without Toxic Glues

A Commitment to Purity

In the modern woodworking industry, glue is ubiquitous. Walk down the aisle of any culinary store, and virtually every wooden cutting board you see—whether edge-grain or end-grain—is an assembly of small wood strips permanently bonded together by industrial adhesives. While this method allows manufacturers to use smaller, cheaper scraps of wood, it introduces synthetic chemicals into the kitchen. At The Wood Chef, we reject this practice entirely. We are defined by our uncompromising commitment to 100% solid wood construction. Here is how we do it, and why it matters.

Sourcing Wide Slabs

The foundation of our process is sourcing. To build a large cutting board without glue, we must start with a very wide, thick piece of lumber. We exclusively use premium Sapele (African Mahogany), specifically searching for large-diameter trees that yield broad slabs. This is significantly more challenging and expensive than buying narrow planks, but it is the only way to achieve a seamless, joint-free product.

Honoring the Natural Grain

When we cut a board from a single piece of wood, we are honoring the natural structure of the tree. A solid piece of wood expands and contracts uniformly with changes in humidity and temperature. In glued boards, the varying grain directions of the individual strips fight against each other during expansion, eventually causing the glue joints to fail and the board to crack. By keeping the wood whole, we drastically increase the structural integrity and lifespan of the piece.

Meticulous Milling and Sanding

Without the distraction of multi-colored glued patterns, the quality of our milling and finishing must be absolutely flawless. We carefully flatten and thickness each slab to ensure perfect stability on your countertop. We then undergo a rigorous, multi-stage sanding process, smoothing the dense Sapele fibers until they feel like glass. This incredibly smooth surface is essential for hygiene, as it leaves nowhere for bacteria to hide.

The Chemical-Free Finish

Because we use no glue, our boards are entirely free of formaldehyde and other VOCs found in wood adhesives. To maintain this purity, we refuse to use petroleum-based mineral oils for the final finish. We hand-rub every piece with our custom blend of organic MCT oil (derived from coconuts) and raw beeswax. This deeply penetrates and protects the wood naturally.

The Ultimate Result

The result of this painstaking process is a kitchen tool of unparalleled safety, durability, and beauty. You get a solid, heavy, uncompromised slab of premium hardwood. No glue to fail, no chemicals to leach, and no microplastics to consume. Discover the peace of mind that comes from true craftsmanship with The Wood Chef.
